I suggest you check out her blog posts too (the back of the book has a link). I will most likely buy a few others from her when I come across the need. Fours stars because the book ended abruptly. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
I’m not really one for short books. While some people find issues wading through a single book trying to find what they want, I tend to find it troublesome wading through a list of books trying to find what I want. A lot of authors these days seem to think a lot of little books is the way to go and I’m not a fan. Of course part of that ends out being that not only do they not give you a big enough book, but they give you they aren’t even clear what that book is about and then they don’t deliver anyway. At least you don’t think they do, but you aren’t sure, because it’s not clear what they were supposed to deliver.
Books like Kylie’s are a little different in that they have a clear title and they focus on just that one subject. They sound like they really want to help you and it’s easier to find what you want. I still prefer longer books, but if I am going to read something shorter, I absolutely want something like Kylie has done.
Kylie touches on some good points such as why one character might use more formal dialogue and why another might use much more casual wording. She discusses how emotion affects characters and how characters more likely to show their emotions talk differently than characters who try to suppress it.
What characters may say dependent on when and where they live as well as what they do for a living is also covered here.
Finally, she has a list of twenty-two questions to ask yourself about your character to help you understand better how they would talk.
I like Kylie Day's work and this book is no exception. If you are having trouble finding your character's voice, I would recommend you check out this book.
