Deputy Roman Charsguard survived Afghanistan where he lost his best friend—his K-9 handler James. Roman was a military dog until two years ago when he developed the ability to shift into a human. It’s not easy to learn how to be a man. He found a place to live in Mad Creek, a haven for the secret world of dog shifters. Finding a reason to live has been harder. That is, until a certain human walks into the Mad Creek Sheriff’s office and starts making trouble.

Matt Barclay has the worst luck. First he was shot in a SWAT drug raid, then he was sent as DEA investigator to Mad Creek, a little town in the California mountains. Matt’s job is to keep a lookout for illegal drug farms, but nobody in the town wants him there. And then there’s Roman, Matt’s erstwhile baby-sitter. He’s the hottest guy Matt’s ever seen, even if he is a bit peculiar. If this job doesn’t kill Matt, sexual frustration just might.

The town is counting on Roman to prevent Matt from learning about dog shifters, Matt’s counting on Roman to be his work partner and tell him the truth, and Roman’s trying to navigate love, sex, and a whole lot of messy human emotions. Who knew it was so complicated to walk like a man?

I really enjoyed this book. Roman's past is explored and I couldn't help but cry at certain points of it. If you know Roman's basic history, it's easy to figure out which parts. I don't want to give away too much, since it just came out. Roman's point of view is interesting, considering he was once a dog and only having been a man for a short time (compared to his time as a dog).
The biggest issue I had with this book was the ending.
There were some plot threads left hanging. Especially in relation to what happened with Matt's Dad and what Luci ended up doing. I don't want to say that the book felt rushed, because the relationship between Matt and Roman was well fleshed out. Their slow build to a romance was very well done. However, there really isn't a lot of showing their relationship after Matt learns about Roman and Mad Creek.
I admit, I might have missed something. But overall, I'll be reading this book again.

How to Walk Like a Man Howl at the Moon Book 2 edition by Eli Easton Romance eBooks Reviews

I wasn't going to read this series.

I resisted because, although I love fantasy and sf, I'm often less happy when animals are involved, because I've been around so many. Writers often fail in giving me believable creatures. I read an entire well-written novel about dragons who, except for flying and some mechanical aspects, might as well have been humans. It's annoying.

So I'm wary. However, I have read quite a few Eli Easton novels and stories. I trust her in that she has my number where romance goes. There is always humor, always this underlying sweetness, always this sense of family no matter the dynamics, all of which hit my sweet spots.

So, when I was hunting for a m/m romance and just couldn't find anything that appealed to me (as with all romances for me, I want well written, well researched, compelling, sweet, and HEA), I finally read the sample of How To Howl At the Moon, and laughed, and surrendered. When I was done, I shook my head, and bought this one along with a f/m, started them at the same time, but finished this one first because I had to know. There's a lot of actual danger and man, hurdles for our two characters to get past. I had to know how Easton managed it. And STILL, she made me laugh out loud several times!

The upshot is, I'll read the whole series. She got me. I'm glad.
4-4.5 stars

This was a really good story. I really liked Roman and Matt and enjoyed their story a lot. I did read book #1 before reading this story but I'd say it's enough of a standalone that you don't need to read #1 in order to enjoy #2.

Roman is a deputy sheriff in the small town, Mad Creek, he lives in. Roman is human now but before 2 years ago Roman was a German Shepherd that worked as an explosives sniffer in the military. In this book, dogs with close relationships with their owners can sometimes be given a "spark" when their owner dies that (quickens) them and allows the dog to shift into a human. When Roman's handler died, Roman gained the ability to shift and then had to figure out how to live as a human.

Matt is a DEA agent that is gay but keeps his sexuality hidden. He has a "girlfriend" to keep his father off his back but she's actually just a friend whose family is also very pushy so they use each other as fake significant others to fend of their respective family pressures. Matt was injured in an operation a while back and is still recovering when he's assigned to Mad Creek. His task in Mad Creek is to keep a eye out for illegal growers that might be trying to take advantage of the massive amounts of unused land around the town.

Lance is the sheriff of Mad Creek (and a MC from book #1 in the series) and Roman accompanies him to a meeting of local law enforcement. At this meeting, Lance and Roman find out that the DEA is investigating the area for illegal growers trying to set up shops in remote areas. Since Mad Creek is mostly inhabited by the "quickened" (aka dog shifters), they don't exactly welcome strangers, fearing that someone might figure out that something weird is going on in their town. Because of this, Lance makes a bigger deal than he should have about having a DEA agent stationed in Mad Creek for 12 months and this just makes the DEA wonder why he's objecting so much and more insistent on having someone assigned there. Matt ends up being assigned to Mad Creek but goes there knowing that the sheriff doesn't want him there and his time there probably wont be fun.

When Matt arrives, Lance assigns Roman to work with Matt and keep him in the field (and away from town) as much as possible. Matt and Roman had met briefly in the first book (when Roman pulled Matt out of a firefight and possibly saved his life) and Matt's been wanting to see Roman again since then. As they work together, they start to become friends. There's an attraction between them but Roman hasn't been in a relationship yet so he's iffy on...well pretty much everything. It also doesn't help that Matt's still "in the closet" about his sexuality and despite their friendship and strong mutual attraction, Matt and Roman have some difficulties because of misunderstandings. There's some drama about Roman, what he is and how/when to tell Matt, as well as some issues with marijuana growers that try to move into the area. It takes some time and effort but everything is settled nicely, allowing Matt and Roman to start on a nice HEA together.

This was a really enjoyable story. I really liked Roman and thought it was interesting to see how he dealt with everything. TBH, with Roman being kind of new to humanity (let alone relationships), at times he almost seemed too innocent (a bit child-like at times) but his feelings were certainly adult enough so it worked for me. I liked Matt very much...he made a couple of mistakes but they were pretty minor and ones I could understand how they came about. Overall, I really liked both the characters and the story itself so I'd recommend this story. )

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a very good job.
Eli Easton's "Howl at the Moon" series is about a little town called Mad Creek in the Sierra Nevada mountains populated by people who used to be dogs. Unlike most shifter stories, these "were dogs" started as dogs and transformed into humans but they retain a lot of doggy characteristics. They are serious, passionate and also fun loving and kind of goofy. "How to Walk Like a Man" is about Roman, who started life as a German Shepherd in the army K9 corps in where he and his handler were stationed in Afghanistan. HIs handler is killed by a stray missle and Roman is returned the the USA, a grief stricken dog with a certain amount of PTSD. One night in the kennel, he transforms into a man for the first time. Roman escapes as a man and meets up with an old mutt, also a shifter, who tells him how to get to Mad Creek. There he he meets Lance, the border collie sheriff and his mother who bring him into the "pack" and teach him what he needs to know about being a human being. He also meets a human, Matt, and slowly his heart begins to heal.

I'd recommend all of the "Howl at the Moon" series to anyone looking for some gay-themed light reading.
